Big Blue Ball (2008)

Not a Peter Gabriel album in itself, but the long overdue result of three recording weeks at Real World Studios in 1991, 1992 and 1995.

Big Blue Ball is the culmination of the work of musicians from all around the world and the very epitome of what Real World Records is all about. In its early stages it was planned to evolve into a new solo album, and this is evident on the three tracks in which Gabriel takes lead vocals. The first of these is opening number, "Whole Thing", – a stunning song with one of the finest Gabriel vocals in a long time. The song heavily featured throughout Ewan McGregor's Long Way Down TV series.

The Gabriel and Karl Wallinger partnership really shines throughout this collection of songs, but most prominently on the original version of "Burn You Up, Burn You Down" - the third version of this particular song, which differs from both the 2003 single release and the version on 2003's Hit compilation.

Another highlight is the Joseph Arthur/Gabriel duet, "Exit Through You", featuring a typical Gabriel groove, distorted drums and wonderful performance from both singers.

While these three tracks might be the finest music on the album, Gabriel is careful not to dominate, leaving the wealth of talent from across the globe to shine throughout the rest. Big Blue Ball is an upbeat, eclectic mix of musical styles, languages, instruments and atmospheres, and although it may not suit all tastes, it is a perfect example of what Peter Gabriel set out to achieve with Real World Studios.
